The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is one of the Medical Royal Colleges - the oldest of which was founded in 1505. Like the other colleges, we have a major role in postgraduate medical education and professional standards: setting syllabuses for postgraduate training in paediatrics, overseeing the training, running examinations, organising courses and conferences, issuing guidance and conducting research. These responsibilities are set out in more detail in the Responsibilities of a Medical Royal College Responsibilities of a Medical Royal College.

We are one of the newest Colleges, having been founded in 1996. We trace our origins back, however, to the British Paediatric Association, founded in 1928, which acted as a focus for professional activity in the field of paediatrics prior to the formation of the College.

Our objectives are:

Most of this work is carried out in the UK, but we have a small but important programme of work overseas supported in part by the David Baum International Foundation.

The College currently has about 11,500 members worldwide, the majority of whom are based in the UK and Ireland.

College Council

The College is run by a Council, elected by the membership. Council comprises the elected regional representatives and honorary officers and a limited number of ex-officio members who together serve as the Trustees of the College (it is also attended by a number of observers). Council is the governing body of the College. However, as it meets only three times a year, it devolves responsibility to other committees, such as Executive Committee and Finance Committee, in order that decisions can be made between Council meetings. Council determines matters of major policy while other decisions are brought to Council for ratification.

Executive Committee (EC)

The Executive Committee comprises senior officers and staff.  EC is responsible for maintaining a watching brief on all committee activities, synthesising their work and providing the driving force to take College activities forward; it presents matters for debate, decision or ratification to Council.

Special Interest Groups and Specialty Groups

  • These are independent groups affiliated to the College.
  • Each group is owned by its members, not by the College, and its members and their elected officers take full responsibility for the actions of the group.
  • The College offers groups practical support it reasonably can.
  • The College and the groups will work together to ensure that the aims of the respective bodies can be met.

College Staff

There are around 100 staff, engaged in training, education, exams, research and policy development. The College relies heavily on the expertise of our membership to carry out the work of our various committees and to provide professional advice.

The College works closely with other bodies that have responsibilities in the same or related areas, including the Department of Health, the Deaneries, the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, the GMC, NCAS, NICE, children's charities and the other Medical Royal Colleges.
