ChildChild Protection is a major area of work at the College in terms of supporting both clinicians and families.

It is an important but emotive and potentially contentious subject, and the College strives to provide clear evidence-based information.

Justice Select Committee - August 2010

The Justice Select Committee has launched an inquiry into the operation of the Family Courts. RCPCH plans to submit evidence to this enquiry particularly in terms of the impact of the recent changes in the Children, Schools and Family Act 2010. Members are invited to submit examples of direct experience of impact of this new legislation, plus any other relevant comments.

Joint position statement on the delivery of court services to children in family proceedings.

 

GMC Call for Evidence - August 2010

Call for evidence by the GMC on doctors' roles and responsibilities in child protection. RCPCH and BACCH request contributions by 17 September 2010.

  

Munro Review of Child Protection - July 2010

Call for evidence. On 10 June 2010 the Minister of State for Education, Michael Grove MP, announced a review of children's social work and child protection. On 1 July 2010 Professor Munro made a call for evidence.

 

Vetting & Barring Scheme - June 2010

The new coalition government announced in June the ceasation of the vetting & barring scheme. Read the letter from Theresa May, Secretary of State announcing this.

 

The Children Schools and Families Bill - 8 April 2010

The Children Schools and Families Bill, including Part 2 which gives the media enhanced access to family proceedings, received Royal Assent on 8 April 2010.

 

Physical Punishment - 30 March 2010

In March Sir Roger Singleton, Chief Advisor on the Safety of Children, released an independent report on the physical punishment of children.

 

Children in the Youth Justice System: Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing

CALL FOR MEMBER PARTICIPATION - 8 February 2010

11Million has been funded to undertake a 2 year project on Children in the Youth Justice System: Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing. Dr Rosalyn Proops, RCPCH Child Protection Officer, is representing the College on the Expert Advisory Group for this project. The terms of reference include objects to:

  • Explore the relevant current policy, research, provision and practice
  • Seek the views of children and young people
  • Identify good practice and gaps in policy and provision
  • Make recommendations the National Advisory Group on Health and Criminal Justice

Significant Harm: the health effects of detention of children seeking asylum
(10th December 2009)

The Royal Colleges of Paediatrics and Child Health, General Practitioners and Psychiatrists and the UK Faculty of Public Health have published a policy statement and recommendations on the harms to the physical and mental health of children and young people in the UK who are subjected to administrative immigration detention.
