This is a monthly update of  key documents, events and items of interest that have come out in the past month. Items have been selected that should be of particular interest to paediatricians across the UK, however more general items have also been included. It should be of particular interest to Clinical Directors.

RCPCH Publications and Documents:

• RCPCH Guidance on the Role of the Consultant Paediatrician (2009) - guidance to disseminate information on new and innovative approaches to the role of acute paediatricians.
• Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Units  (2009) - guidance for commissioners and providers on how such services can provide safe care for children.
• Supporting Paediatric Reconfiguration - A Framework For Standards (2008) - outlines the standards that any paediatric service should achieve either currently or through service redesign.
• Long-term Workforce Briefing (2008) -  this briefing provides a summary of the workforce issues explored in MtFII. The paper would act as a good basis for briefing local Chief Executives about why there are difficulties staffing your unit.
• Solutions for the medical staffing of acute units (2008) - this paper looks at solutions to the immediate workforce issues facing paediatric units.
• Follow Up Survey of Paediatric Clinical Directors New Contract Job Plans - Survey Results (2005) - this surveys assesses progress made by clinical directors to revise job plans, in line with the new consultant contract.
