RCPCH Working Party on Sleep
Physiology and Respiratory Control Disorders in Childhood -
Standards for Services for Children with Disorders of Sleep
Physiology
This guideline covers the diagnosis and
management of disorders of sleep physiology and respiratory control
in children and the organisation of such services nationally.
It is particularly relevant to parents, primary and secondary care
physicians, surgeons and health service managers.
The GDG included representatives from sleep
physiology, physiology, paediatrics, physiotherapy, paediatric
neurology and neurophysiology as well as one patient/carer
representative on the GDG. Systematic searches to answer the
clinical questions were carried out on the following databases
(different databases and dates were used for different clinical
questions): Medline (1950-2007), Cochrane Database (no dates
reported) and CINAHL (1982-2006). The searches included
evidence published and included in the databases until December
2006/January 2007. Recommendations were formulated by the
evidence that supported them. Initially, informal consensus
of the working party was used to agree the wording of
recommendations which were then agreed by expert reviewers.
Where no substantial clinical research evidence was identified,
expert opinion of the GDG was used.
The guideline includes a proforma for peer review of sleep
services, discussion of service and resource implications and key
points for audit. The guideline is accompanied by lay
summaries on:
