National Neonatal Audit Programme 1

The National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP) has been established with the aim of informing good clinical practice in aspects of neonatal care by auditing national standards.

Audit Update

In 2010 the questions being addressed by this audit are being amended. A Question Review Working Group was convened and their recommendations approved by the Project Board.

As of the end of 2009 we have ceased auditing the use of surfactant with the first hour of birth, as recent trials suggest very preterm babies can be successfully resuscitated without intubation. NNAP has also stopped auditing the time of first measurement of blood pressure as there is no recognised association between early measurement and outcome.

NNAP was established in January 2006, and is currently funded until March 2011. The audit is addressing 10 audit questions, requiring a clinical dataset of 23 items.

As of May 2010, 174 English units are submitting NNAP data. During this year, Scottish and Welsh neonatal units are also being invited to join the audit.

From October 2008 units contributing data have been de-anonymised and all reports are including full unit names.

The overall aims of the audit are:

  • to assess whether babies requiring specialist neonatal care receive consistent high quality care across England and Wales in relation to the audit questions;
  • to identify areas for improvement in relation to service delivery and the outcomes of care; and
  • to set up a mechanism for ensuring high quality care in neonatal services in the future.

Changing practice in neonatal units

In 2008 we asked clinicians to let us know how participation in the NNAP had changed practice in their neonatal unit. These are some of the Comments comments we received.

Resources

We have produced the following leaflets for use on the neonatal unit:

Guide for Parents Guide for Parents

Information Leaflet for Neonatal Unit Staff Information Leaflet for Neonatal Unit Staff

Please email us if you would like a supply of these leaflets to be sent to your unit.

Two year follow up

NNAP is auditing the health status of babies <32+0 weeks gestation at birth. The electronic form available on the Neonoatal.net is the preferred method, but if a paper version is required, it can be downloaded here:
