Careers fairs

The College hosts careers events across the year as well as having a presence at other external fairs.

These events are a great opportunity to meet the recruitment and careers team who will be able to advise on how the application process works and get advice from current trainees and consultants about career opportunities open to you.

Committees for education and training

The Education and Training Support Team coordinates and administers a number of committees dealing with training and trainee issues. The Certification and Revalidation Team coordinates and administers the CPD sub-committee and the Revalidation Development committee.

'Acting Up' to consultant

Time spent acting up into consultant duties may be recognised towards a training programme leading to the award of a CCT in paediatrics and sub-specialty recognition, if appropriate, subject to a number of conditions.

Trainees will also be able to take time out of programme and credit time towards training as an acting up Consultant if this has been prospectively approved by PMETB/GMC or Royal College (depending on training programme)

Out of Programme (OOP)

Out of Programme (OOP) is a term that relates to those trainees that wish to undertake a range of activities that are outside of their planned training programme.

There are a range of circumstances as to why individuals may want to undertake an OOP; to gain training or clinical experience, to undertake research or to take a career break. These distinct OOP pathways are referred to as:

Specialty training (Run Through ST Training)

Considering applying to paediatrics?

CPD activity approval

Organisations wanting CPD activity approval from the RCPCH can gain this by referring to the CPD activity approval section of the website.

Activity approval is not mandatory but many organisations request it to enable them to place RCPCH CPD credit allocations on their event, activity or course documentation.

Educational supervision

Information for those who undertake an educational supervisory role, for example, college tutors, regional advisors and programme directors.

The National Survey of Trainers

The National Survey of Trainers collects trainers' views on three key issues:

Paediatric recruitment

Specialty Training (ST)

Sub-specialty training (NTN grid scheme)

What is the NTN Grid scheme?

At Level 3 of training (ST6-8/SpR years 3-5) trainees have the opportunity to sub-specialise in a specific area of paediatrics.

ASSET (Assessment Services for Education and Training)

As part of their training, all those in approved training posts (including STs, FTSTAs, LATs, ACFs) must complete workplace-based assessments. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health administers the majority of assessments through the ASSET facility, the College's dedicated online assessment service. Trainees must register with the College to gain an online assessment account.
