Notifying a case

Between 1 June 2012 and 31 March 2013 we are collecting information about incidents of children and young people with epilepsy. These are called case notifications.

We are collecting case notifications from nurses, GPs, Child Death Overview Panel managers, paediatric intensive care  unit managers, representatives of charities, young people and carers. If you are aware of a case that meets the criteria then we want you to notify us.

RCPCH President outlines challenges for paediatric workforce

This month Dr Hilary Cass, the new President of the RCPCH, has spoken about the challenges facing the paediatric workforce - and outlined the College's approach to overcoming them.

In an interview with the Health Service Journal this month, she said:

'Our mortality rates for children aged 0 to 16 is higher in the UK than other parts of Western Europe. There are failings in primary and secondary care that we have got to address and it is not acceptable that the sickest patients can sometimes be seen by the most junior doctor.'

CT scans 'can triple the risk of children getting leukaemia'

A study by the University of Newcastle has found that CT scans can triple the risk of children developing brain cancer and leukemia.

Sir Alan Craft, former RCPCH President, is one of the report authors. Dr Mark Pearce, who led the study, said while the immediate benefits from CT scans usually outweigh the long-term risks, he said reducing radiation doses used in scans should be a priority. He did state that while CT scans tripled the relative risk of childhood cancers, the absolute risk of developing them was still small.
