Leeds children’s heart unit in jeopardy

The future of Leeds General Infirmary has been thrown into doubt after an analysis of data revealed unacceptably high death rates. The hospital had previously failed to release the data which shows that the weight of the child was missing in 130 operations meaning cases were not properly accounted for.  A risk summit to discuss the situation has been organised by NHS England in the city today and will be attended by the Care Quality Commission.

Obese mothers 'put babies' hearts at risk': Infants show early stages of disease when they are born

Babies whose mothers are overweight or obese show early signs of heart disease at birth, warn researchers.

Scans of newborn infants with fat mothers found they have thicker artery walls - a sign of heart disease - than those born to women of ‘normal’ weight.

The arterial thickening occurred independently of the child’s weight at birth, which is a known risk factor for heart disease or stroke in later life.

Information for investigators

The BPSU welcomes applications from clinicians and researchers who wish to carry out national surveillance on rare childhood diseases.

The BPSU provides access to over 3,400 paediatricians and lessens the burden on those clinicians of requests for information from numerous different sources. The BPSU Executive also `provides expertise and support to prospective researchers to ensure that research methodologies are effective and appropriate.

BPSU studies

The BPSU supports studies that address a rare childhood disorder (or rare complication of a commoner disease) of such low incidence as to require cases to be collected nationally in order to generate sufficient numbers for the study.

Since its inception in 1986 the BPSU has completed 81 studies. Information about current and past studies can be found using the links below:

Exam centres - UK

MRCPCH and DCH Clinical centres

It is not always possible to confirm the address details for the UK MRCPCH and DCH Clinical Host Centres well in advance of each examination period. Once an MRCPCH or DCH Clinical Exam Host Centre has submitted confirmation that they are committed to hosting the examination the RCPCH Examinations Team will make every effort to publish the details on this page during each diet of the exam.
