Care pathways for children with allergies

Allergic conditions constitute the commonest causes of chronic disease in childhood and affect upwards of 20% of the child population. They seriously impair quality of life and health and occasionally can lead to death. The socio-economic costs are large.

UK-WHO growth charts

The new growth charts are based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) Child Growth Standards, which describe the optimal growth for healthy, breastfed children. The new charts combine UK90 and WHO data and provide clear instructions on how to measure, plot and interpret the chart.

Features include:

  • an adult height predictor
  • a Body Mass Index converter
  • guidance on gestational age correction.

Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) for urgent and emergency care

PREMs pic_0.JPGPREMs for urgent and emergency care is a tool developed by the RCPCH with Picker Institute Europe to measure the experience of paediatric patients 0-16 years in all urgent and emergency care settings including; GP practices, out-of-hours centres, A&E departments and the ambulance service.

Why do we need the PREM?

MMC cohort study

Are we training the right workforce?

The findings from the second part of the RCPCH's MMC study, a cohort study of paediatric trainees who began their run-through training in 2007, are now available.

Part 2 - 2010 to 2011

Previous censuses

The RCPCH (as the BPA) undertook its first census of the paediatric workforce in 1986 and has completed a biennial census since 1999.

The main findings from RCPCH censuses from 1999 to 2007 are set out below with links to the full documents offering an opportunity to review changes in the paediatric workforce over the years.

Rota compliance and vacancies

The introduction of the Working Time Directive (WTD) in gradual stages over the last few years has been a key driver for the RCPCH and other Medical Colleges to look closely at the issues around service delivery.

Our key aims are to develop safe and sustainable solutions for patients and to ensure that high standards of training are maintained.

This section considers the impact of the European Working Time Regulations (EWTR) through the surveys the College and others have undertaken, and summarises the solutions being developed.

Workforce studies and data

In order to plan the future paediatric medical workforce it is crucial that the College has accurate and up-to-date information about the numbers and characteristics of the paediatric workforce in the UK.

Information on trainee numbers is collected through the registration and enrolment processes in the RCPCH Training Department.

Workforce census

The biennial workforce census is an important element in developing College workforce planning policy. It provides members of the College and the public with a unique view of the growth and trends in the UK paediatric workforce.

This section provides information about the current census, plans for the next, and links to previous census reports since 1999.

Staff, Specialty and Associate Specialist Grade (SSASG) committee members

Committee membership

The RCPCH Committee for SSASG doctors represents the specific needs of SSASG doctors practicing in paediatrics, both College members and non-members with the aim of improving recognition of their contribution to paediatrics as well as their oportunities for continuing professional development, support and progression. The Chair of the Committee sits on College Council.
