RCPCH and RCP unite to call for standardised packaging of tobacco products

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Royal College of Physcians and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians,  have joined together to call on the government to push ahead with plans for standardised packaging of tobacco products.

Junk foods avoid ad ban by targeting children online

The Children’s Food Campaign has accused advertising regulators of failing to protect children from aggressive online marketing by food companies using internet games and advertising.

It wants the Government to introduce statutory regulation to close loopholes allowing advertisements that are banned on children’s television to be shown on manufacturers’ own websites.

The RCPCH is launching an important new series of education courses on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The series offers a range of training for all child health practitioners interested in encouraging quality improvement.

Variation in epilepsy care mapped across the UK

The results of the UK’s first national audit of epilepsy care for children and young people are now available as an interactive web tool, allowing units to see at a glance how they fare against key indicators and how they compare to other units.

Developed by the national Child and Maternal Health Observatory (ChiMat) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the web tools include:

RCPCH responds to measles outbreak

Commenting on the measles outbreak in Wales, Dr David Elliman, immunisation expert at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said:

“The MMR vaccine safety scare back in 1998 meant many parents whose children were born in the early 2000s chose not to have their children immunised.   This scare – which linked MMR to autism – was based on unfounded research, but the result is a generation of unvaccinated children left at risk of contracting the disease.

Parents of autistic children turn to unproven remedies

One in three parents of autistic children have tried interventions that have no scientific basis, as they desperately try to help their offspring, reports the Independent.  A survey carried out by research charity Autistica found parents looking towards copper bracelets, injections and electronic plug-ins releasing chemicals for children to breathe, as well hiring behavioural therapists in a bid to help their children. The survey also exposed a lack of help for those affected, with a chief complaint being the length of time it takes to reach a diagnosis.

New standards for children’s surgery produced

Children with emergency surgical conditions should not wait longer than 12 hours from decision to operate to undergoing surgery, and operations should be scheduled with consideration for the needs of children and their parents, according to new guidance published by the Royal College of Surgeons.
