BPSU - Application Process

We briefly outline the process for applying for a BPSU study and the contributions. First, an applicant submits an initial application to the BPSU Scientific Committee. If approved, the applicant then presents a more detailed application, including the research questionnaire and public information leaflet.

For full guidance, please consult the BPSU study application handbook.

Phase 1

Phase 1 is the submission of an initial application to the BPSU Scientific Committee.

The application must show that the study fits the BPSU eligibility criteria.

Note: The BPSU Scientific Committee expects submission of Phase 2 application within six months of Phase 1 approval. If a Phase 2 application is not forthcoming, the BPSU Office will contact the principal investigator to discuss removing the submission from the application process. The BPSU office will give the principal investigator the opportunity to make a formal Phase 2 application before any further action is taken.

Phase 2

If the Phase 1 application is approved by the Committee, a more detailed Phase 2 application should be completed.

The research questionnaire and public information leaflet should also be submitted to the Scientific Committee at this time.

Post phase 2

If the Phase 2 application is approved, REC and CAG-HRA approval should be obtained and the IG toolkit completed.

Note: Once a Phase 2 application has been accepted, the SC expects the study to commence surveillance within 12 months of Chair’s approval. If surveillance has not commenced in 12 months of Chair’s approval the BPSU Office will contact the principal investigator to discuss the application and the reasons for the delay. If a satisfactory response is not elucidated, the BPSU reserves the right to revoke its Phase 2 approval and the study team will be invited to ‘re-submit’ a Phase 1 application.
