RCPCH President comments on the male/female workforce split
RCPCH President Dr Hilary Cass has been quoted in this morning’s Telegraph on the male/female workforce split after the General Medical Council warned that increasing numbers of women doctors working part-time pose a 'huge risk' to the NHS, with hospitals potentially having to employ far more foreign-trained staff to fill the gaps.
Dr Cass said: 'Paediatrics has always been an attractive speciality for women, and we do have a high number of female doctors in the workforce. This balance means that a significant proportion of paediatricians on the front line are working less than full time - which in itself is good because flexible working can lead to a fresher, more satisfied workforce delivering top-quality care for patients. But the flip side is that it does present challenges for us in terms of making sure rotas are covered so that we're delivering a sustainable service.'
