RCPCH responds to Government commitment on mental health

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health issues a response following today's (18 January 2012) announcement by Government on its £16 million commitment to tackle the stigma around child mental illness.

Responding to the 'Time to Change' campaign, Dr Liz Didcock, Mental Health lead at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said:

'One in ten under 16s has a diagnosable mental health disorder – and many more have mental health problems. Worryingly, the figures are rising.

'We know that early onset mental disorders are more likely to persist in adult life. We also know that children and young people who experience a physical illness are far more likely to develop an emotional disorder. So early detection, prevention and treatment is key.

'Investment in tackling the stigma around conditions such as depression and anxiety and providing outlets for children and young people to get help is a welcome step. We look forward to working with the Government and other partners to tackle the 'hidden epidemic' of mental health disorders in children.'
