RCPCH statement in reponse to Dr David Southall's GMC decision - 22 September 2008
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) welcomes the GMC's decision to allow Dr David Southall to return to child protection work, a field in which he has made an important and distinguished contribution over the course of his career.
There have been widely expressed concerns that GMC processes unfairly penalised doctors working in child protection. We hope that the lifting of the ban on Dr Southall will give all practitioners in this area some measure of reassurance.
Cases such as this are fortunately quite rare. It is important however that doctors and the public have confidence in the even-handedness of the complaints process. The RCPCH is therefore continuing to work with the GMC on how complaints concerning child protection can be best handled.
