Roles and responsibilities
Paediatricians
- Comply with standards for revalidation relevant to their role and specialty.
- Undertake annual appraisal to confirm compliance with standards for revalidation (GMC and RCPCH standards).
- Collect evidence to demonstrate compliance with standards.
- Link with a Responsible Officer for revalidation recommendation.
Appraisers
- Use appraisal process to annually assess doctors against standards and produce summary of progress.
- Seek advice and guidance from RCPCH, where appropriate, to support specialty revalidation process.
Responsible Officers
- Make declarations to the GMC every five years to confirm doctors in their organisation are fit to practise and meeting standards for revalidation.
- Are in most cases the medical director.
- Usually one per organisation.
- Monitor robustness of systems to support revalidation, including appraisal and clinical governance.
- Guidance is available from Departments of Health in England and Northern Ireland and via the Revalidation Support Team in England
Employers
- Ensure robust systems are in place to support revalidation, including appraisal and clinical governance.
- Appoint a Responsible Officer to the Board for doctors in their organisation.
Medical Royal Colleges
- Design and implement specialty standards, guidance and tools for revalidation.
- Work with partners to support quality assurance processes for revalidation
Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
- Co-ordinate the development of standards, guidance, tools and processes for specialty revalidation across Colleges and Faculties to ensure consistent development and implementation across the different medical specialties.
GMC
- Design and implement a robust system for revalidation of all doctors.
- Work with medical Royal Colleges and other stakeholders to ensure effective introduction and progress of revalidation.
GMC employer liaison advisers
- Provide support, advice and guidance to employers in managing concerns about doctors.
- Pilots underway.
Departments of Health/Revalidation Support Team
- Oversee UK-wide implementation of revalidation via the UK Revalidation Programme Board.
- Develop processes, training and guidance for role of Responsible Officer.
- In England, implementation is also via the NHS Revalidation Support Team
- In Scotland, implementation is led via the Scottish Revalidation Delivery Board
- In Wales, implementation is led via the Welsh Revalidation Delivery Board
- In Northern Ireland, implementation is led via the Revalidation Delivery Group at the DHSSPSNI
