Overview
- Inflammatory demyelinating diseases are a rare group of illnesses which affect the central nervous system (which is made up of the brain and spinal cord).
- Many children recover well from these conditions, however, some have longer-term problems and may even have another bout of illness.
- We currently do not know how often these conditions occur in children in the UK and Ireland, and we can’t always say what the future holds for a child who is affected. Along with other studies by our paediatric demyelination research group , our population study attempts to fill some of these gaps in our knowledge.
This study aims to:
- Find out how many children are affected by a new demyelinating event (incidence) in the UK and Ireland.
- Find out what happens to these children in the longer-term, for example how many children have a disability or a second episode.
- Describe treatments currently being used in the UK and Ireland.
Duration: September 2009 – September 2010
Funding: Multiple Sclerosis Society and Action Medical Research Charities
Ethical approval: The study has Black Country Research Ethics Committee (09/H1202/92) and NIGB Ethics and Confidentiality Committee approvals (ECC/BPSU 4-03 [FT1] /2009).
