Governance of BPSU

The BPSU was launched in 1986 by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Health Protection Agency and the University College London-Institute of Child Health (London) and is operated in cooperation with the Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and the Faculty of Paediatrics of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Funding

The BPSU is currently funded by the Department of Health until 2012

There are three parent bodies of the Unit:

Structure

  • A scientific coordinator and research facilitator undertake day-to-day running of the unit
  • The Unit is also supported by two medical advisors
  • The BPSU Executive Committee, presently chaired by Professor Alan Emond oversees scientific matters
  • The Chair and committee, with the support of the scientific coordinator, research facilitator and medical advisors, provide advice and support for those undertaking and wishing to undertake surveillance of rare paediatric disorders
