Statement on refugee children

The RCPCH has issued a public statement as a result of these events. We are also keen to add our voice to those who have insisted that more be done, and to assist members who would like to contribute, independently or collectively, to safeguarding the lives and wellbeing of children affected by war and those seeking asylum.

What you can do

There are a number of things that members can do to assist children and their families in this time of crisis:

  • Work for an organisation offering services to asylum seekers in the UK. The BMA gives a list of refugee organisations and projects in the UK.

  • Work for a charity providing services for refugees in the UK and elsewhere - in key European hubs such as Budapest, Vienna and Calais, at the European borders in Sicily and Greece, and elsewhere such as in Kenya, Jordan, Lebanon and Thailand, such as Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF), Doctors of the World (MDM), Save the Children, Oxfam, International Rescue Committee (IRC) and UNHCR.

  • If you have patients who are refugees, make sure that you can point them in the right direction. Migrants' Rights Network has a number of useful links.

  • Raise awareness – stop the indifference over this important issue. Speak up on social media, write to your local MP and speak up for the rights of vulnerable children and refugees worldwide.

  • Sign one of the petitions available online, and share a link to the petition with your friends, family and contacts, particularly the petition to Parliament.

  • Donate to one of the organisations working with asylum seekers and refugees (listed above).

What you can do with the College

The RCPCH is mandated to safeguard and protect the health of children worldwide.

You could show your support:

  • Work with us to update our guidelines for paediatricians working with refugee children in the UK.

  • Set up a special interest group on refugee children’s health and wellbeing.

  • Support our work in Palestine, where ongoing tension and clashes have left millions of refugees.
