Child health in Iraq

The College has longstanding links with paediatricians in Iraq, particularly in Kurdistan, and this relationship has led to the development of a programme of postgraduate training.

Initially run in Jordan due to security issues, for the last two years the course in paediatrics and child health has been run in Iraq in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Kurdistan and Hawleer Medical University, Erbil.

The course has been very well received with 40-50 paediatricians participating in sessions on a variety of topics including:

  • paediatric resuscitation
  • management of the seriously ill child
  • child protection
  • teaching paediatrics and child health
  • evidence-based medicine.

The project aims to increase year-on-year the numbers of local paediatricians trained to deliver the training so that the programme eventually becomes self-sustaining.
