Course aim

An introduction to children’s rights and active engagement of children and young people in health services for paediatricians, health workers and the voluntary sector working in health-based settings or services.

The course covers:

  • what matters to children, young people and families
  • what active engagement means
  • engagement tools that are age- and stage-appropriate
  • using voice data to support your work and health services.

The RCPCH team has an extensive knowledge and expertise in engagement and supported us through their advice and tools to think about how we can bring children and young people into our quality improvement work and service planning.

Course description

This course brings together our skills, expertise and knowledge from delivering child and youth engagement programmes with 13,000 under 25s over the last nine years through RCPCH &Us, where children and young people have helped inform and shape health policy and practice on topics such as mental health, sickle cell, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, climate change, health inequalities, service design and more.

The day will provide a mix between theory and practical guidance on how to do engagement with children and young people from different ages, backgrounds, stages and experiences. We’ll share resources, tips and practical advice, and there will be lots of opportunities for interactive learning.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will:

  • feel confident in engagement planning
  • be aware of different types of engagement approaches and how to use them practically
  • be able to apply legal frameworks to engagement activity with children and young people.

It was so helpful to be able to think about how to do things differently, we don’t use surveys anymore, but have other ways now to find out what our patients think about the service or what their service needs are.

Target audience

  • Paediatric trainees, SAS doctors, and consultant paediatricians
  • Health professionals from other medical disciplines
  • Voluntary sector staff working in health-based settings
