About the Paediatrician's Handbook

A free, invaluable resource for College members, this brings together an enormous amount of information and advice on many important issues that govern a paediatrician’s working life.

The handbook empowers paediatricians to improve working practices to raise the standard of paediatric medical care and to promote high quality, effective and efficient health services for children and young people.

It is available at no cost to all RCPCH members. To access it, you will need to be signed in to the website.

The handbook answers some of the questions about a career in paediatrics, including:

  • why should I choose paediatrics?
  • what will the training consist of?
  • what are the future career options?
  • what pay can I expect?
  • what happens if I find myself in difficulty?

It aims to give answers to some of these more specific factual questions and also considers some of the issues which are harder to predict, but which will be every bit as important, such as the environment in which you will practice.

The handbook complements British Medical Association, NHS Employers and General Medical Council guidance - with a specific focus on:

  • children’s services
  • covering working practices
  • on-call duties
  • job descriptions of paediatricians
  • workload
  • outpatient clinics
  • education
  • professional development.
