New members' area at RCPCH London

RCPCH Treasurer Dr Liz Marder tells us about a brand new members' area that will be available from this October at the newly refurbished home of RCPCH.

As RCPCH Treasurer I frequently visit the College’s London Office for meetings. I have missed doing so during the pandemic and am looking forward to being able to resume my visits as we start to return to business as usual.

However, coming from out of town, I usually come for a whole day or more, and need somewhere to base myself - to sit and work, meet colleagues, or relax in between formal meetings. The space available up till now has been the ground floor members' room – but anyone who has been there will know that the small, stuffy, dark room was not a particularly welcoming place.

Well, that is all changing! As you may be aware the offices are currently closed for refurbishment, and as part of this we are developing a new, larger, better equipped members' area.

From this autumn I look forward to being welcomed in a new reception area with seating for visitors. I will then go through security turnstiles into our new members' area. There, I will be able to relax in comfortable seating, and watch TV with a cup of (free) tea or coffee. Or work at one of the desk spaces, taking advantage of the newly upgraded Wi-Fi and places to charge my phone and laptop. If I want a private conversation with a colleague, I will be able to drop in and use one of the small meeting rooms.

The BAPM library with the Peter Dunn local collection (currently hidden away on the second floor) will be available to browse through. There will also be facilities for coat and luggage storage and for our more energetic colleagues, bike storage, as well as access to shower facilities.

It has been really exciting to work with the project team on colour schemes and design and we will soon be going shopping for furniture – making use of recycled options where possible as part of our commitment to sustainability. The company we have engaged for the building and design work have been working with RCPCH &Us to bring artwork representing children and young people from all four of nations into the building. We're looking forward to them being hung on walls of our members' area.

The new members' area will be accessible from October, Monday – Friday from 08:00 to - 18:00.
Hope to see you there sometime!
