The principles described in this guidance aim to support clinicians who are consulting virtually with patients to provide care in a way that is in the best interests of children and young people, whilst protecting both from the risks associated with virtual consultations.

In January 2019 we responded to the Scottish Government consultation on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Bill. We welcome commitments to strengthen the existing legislative framework for the protection of women and girls from FGM, a form of gender based violence.

In September 2023 we responded to the Department for Education’s Open Consultation on Working Together to Safeguard Children: Changes to statutory guidance on inter-agency working to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Healthcare professionals, external stakeholders and families were consulted during the development of this work to understand what challenges may prevent this guidance from being adopted locally. Recommendations have been shaped to address and suggest ways of unlocking these issues.
