Our breastfeeding statement

Mixed messages and social stigma are barriers to breastfeeding - that's the message from our new position statement on breastfeeding launched in early August. This received widespread media coverage, including BBC News, ITV Wales, South Wales Argus and the key UK nationals.

The UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world. New statistics from Public Health Wales reveal that only:

  • 51% of Welsh parents said they were definitely going to breastfeed
  • 19% breastfed for less than a month.

Our statement marks the start of an ongoing campaign to improve breastfeeding in the UK, which it will deliver in partnerships with other organisations. See the statement, with a summary and video

Help us shape the agenda on breastfeeding in Wales
