Dr Sunil Bhopal joined the RCPCH Board of Trustees in October 2023.

Sunil is an academic paediatrician in community child health specialising in the early years. He qualified from Leeds Medical School in 2010, and has been predominantly based in Newcastle upon Tyne since, with three years in London and Haryana, India (2015-2018; Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), and a further year based in Westminster on a national NHS leadership scheme (2022-2023; clinical fellow to Dame Jenny Harries, Chief Executive, UK Health Security Agency).

He has experience of studying, working, and living overseas including in India and west/eastern Africa. His formal qualifications are in International Health (BSc; 2008), Medicine (MBChB; 2010), Paediatrics (MRCPCH; 2014), Clinical Research (MClinRes; 2015); and Epidemiology (PhD; 2019).

Recent leadership roles have included trustee at Foundation Years Information & Research, The Children’s Foundation and Heworth Grange Secondary School in Gateshead. He is clinical advisor for the child health division at Newcastle City Council, and honorary clinical lecturer at the LSHTM.

At the RCPCH he is former chair of the special interest group for global health, the International Child Health Group, and has supported the College’s policy work, especially during COVID-19, as media spokesperson.

Away from work, he can be found on the tennis court, jogging, or dad-dancing with his three young children. He was interviewed on clinical-academic work, life-influences and raising a family, for the Global Health Lives podcast in 2021.
