Education and careers

We are a specialty that is rewarding, varied and where you can make a huge impact. As your College we're by your side from pre-med to retirement and wherever you career as a paediatrician takes you. Learn more about how we can help your development.

We're sharing your stories as paediatricians about why you chose paediatrics, and what keeps you there – as well as highlighting all the work the College is doing to keep supporting you throughout your training and career.

Healthcare is changing and the paediatric training programme needs to adapt to prepare doctors for this. Our report, published in October 2020, sets out 11 training principles, and provides ideas of how things can be achieved differently.

It also explains our response to the Government-commissioned "Shape of training" report: we will introduce a new two-level, run through specialty training programme by 2023, ensuring it is flexible, fulfilling and fit-for-purpose.

COVID-19 update

The pandemic has caused disruption to medical education, training and assessment in the UK. We're committed to supporting paediatric trainees and those who deliver paediatric training in the UK.

While we've cancelled face-to-face courses and events until January 2021, we now have a broad range of online events and our free eLearning. We are now safely delivering our theory and clinical exams, and we have guidance on trainee progression this year.

We also have a guidance on paediatric services, staffing/rotas and collecting data on cases, as well as summaries of the current evidence - you can find it all on our COVID-19 hub.
