Professor Barratt CBE qualified from St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School and, after being registrar at Great Ormond Street Hospital, became a research fellow at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore, in pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. At the Institute of Child Health, he was appointed professor of paediatric nephrology and became consultant nephrologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. There, he focused on childhood renal disease and, with Michael Dillon, created a respected research programme at the Institute of Child Health.
Barratt was an excellent teacher, and published extensive literature and was the editor of the first four editions of ‘Pediatric nephrology’. He became the Director of Clinical Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the President of the British Association for Paediatric Nephrology, and received honours from international associations and societies. In 1997, he received a CBE.
