The findings were released as part of Infection Prevention Week, during which the charity urged parents and carers to trust their instincts and seek medical help if their baby seems unwell.

RCPCH Vice President for Policy, Dr Mike McKean, said:

The Lullaby Trust’s survey offers important insight into how common it is for parents to feel uncertain when navigating their baby’s health, particularly around infections. Parents always want to do is the best for their little ones, and it is the same for paediatricians and child health professionals. We stand ready to help. If a parent is ever concerned about a child’s health, they should contact their healthcare provider or NHS 111.

There are also simple preventative steps that families can take, including keeping up to date with the national vaccination programme. If you're unsure whether your baby or child is fully vaccinated, check their Red Book or contact your GP practice.

At the same time, as paediatricians, we call on government to ensure infection prevention is at the fore of their work on child health. This includes making sure paediatricians and other child health professionals are based in NHS 111, ready to support parents with advice and guidance. The national rollout of the Healthier Together programme is another positive step, giving families clear, consistent information to help them feel confident in making decisions, and ensuring access to vaccinations is straightforward and easy for all. By prioritising infection prevention and ensuring families have access to trusted advice and timely care, we can help parents feel confident and supported when it matters most.
