Data shows that flu season has started early in Wales and is already circulating within communities. Many people mistakenly believe flu is simply a bad cold, but this is far from the case. Flu can make children feel extremely unwell and lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Every winter in the UK, thousands of children – even those without underlying health conditions – need hospital care because of flu.
To support children, parents and carers this winter, RCPCH has produced a flu vaccine fact sheet, designed to address common concerns and provide clear, evidence-based information.
The fact sheet includes:
- Who is eligible for the flu vaccine
- Where to get it in Wales
- What to do if you have missed an appointment
- Common FAQs on vaccine safety and efficacy
The fact sheet is available now and aims to support families in protecting their children during what is expected to be a challenging winter for health services.
RCPCH Deputy Officer for Wales, Dr Malcolm Gajraj, said:
Flu is not something to take lightly. We are already seeing considerable cases of flu among children in Wales, and we know from experience that flu can lead to serious illness and hospital stays. The vaccine is safe, effective, and the best way to protect your child. By getting your child vaccinated, you’re helping to keep them well and reduce the spread of flu in our communities.
