RCPCH responds to Government changes to NHS pension rules

The Government has announced today that the pension rules for senior clinicians are to be changed, to allow them to take on extra shifts, treat more patients and help to reduce waiting times without losing out financially.

Responding to the UK Government’s announcement to overhaul NHS pension rules, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), Professor Russell Viner said:

We welcome the UK Government signalling action to change these unfair pension rules. Senior clinicians must feel free to take on extra work to care for patients without being penalised with higher tax bills. It is good that the Government is listening and we hope it makes sure any solutions truly provide a sensible way forward, now and in the future.

The NHS is finding it hugely challenging to retain staff and tackling the perverse incentives in the pension rules for senior clinicians is one of many steps required to alleviate growing workforce pressures.
