Confirmation of pensions fix welcome news for members, says RCPCH

Today it was confirmed by Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of the NHS, that a short term solution to the pensions tax crisis has been agreed.

The letter says:

The NHS will therefore now ensure that clinicians who exceed their NHS pension annual allowance in this financial year are not left out of pocket. This scheme will apply to doctors, nurses, AHPs and other clinicians in active clinical roles who are members of the NHS pension schemes. It will cover all pension saving in the NHS schemes in 2019/20 (but not annual allowance tax charges falling due on pension saving outside the NHS schemes).

In response to the letter, Professor Russell Viner, President of RCPCH said:

We welcome this news and we’re pleased that the NHS has listened to voices from across the medical community. This short term solution allows us some breathing space, which is exactly what we need as we face into a tough winter. We do note that it’s for one year only – and we strongly encourage any incoming government to prioritise a lasting and sustainable solution to this avoidable problem.

We urge members to review the details published today on the NHS website.
