Course description
Congenital heart disease is the most important birth defect that can have potentially critical as well as long term implications. Affects up to eight in every 1,000 babies born in the UK, and about one in four need attention in the newborn period. This one-day course discusses on when to suspect heart disease and what steps to take once suspected. The course also will emphasise on the benign cardiac findings in the newborn period and how to address these.
The course focuses on clinical scenarios related to the fetus and newborn and highlights on early detection of congenital heart disease as well as what to do and how to manage these babies in the neonatal unit.
Using lectures and workshops, the course will provide you with an understanding of neonatal ECGs, PDA, PFO and PPHN.
Course aim
This course will increase your skills and knowledge in identifying and managing neonatal cardiac problems within neonates and paediatrics, and provide delegates with the clinical skills to undertake neonatal ECG assessment.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Explain key concepts of early diagnosis of neonatal heart disease
- Discuss the role of fetal echocardiography in predicting and managing neonatal heart problems
- Recognise and manage cardiac diagnosis in an acutely unwell baby
- Assess and manage PDA and PPHN in the newborn
- Understand the approach to benign cardiac conditions in the newborn
- Develop a stepwise approach at evaluating paediatric ECG’s
