Code of conduct for RCPCH online teaching events

We are committed to ensuring that all online educational events, which are hosted on Zoom, are welcoming, respectful and inclusive. We value the participation of all attendees and staff and celebrate diversity in all its forms. Discriminatory, harassing or inappropriate behaviour are not tolerated.

By attending an RCPCH online educational event, participants agree to conduct themselves in a professional, respectful and considerate manner towards others, regardless of gender, race, religion or belief, age, sexual orientation, disability or any other protected or personal characteristic.

This code of conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all participants and outlines conduct that is not acceptable at RCPCH online educational events.

Respect and professionalism

Participants must treat all individuals with courtesy and respect at all times. Personal attacks, offensive, inappropriate or discriminatory language or gestures are not acceptable.

Constructive discussion and debate are encouraged. Critique ideas, not individuals, and respect differing perspectives.

Appropriate environment

Participants should join the online event from a quiet, suitable location with minimal distractions. Where possible, avoid joining from a bedroom.

If necessary, use a virtual or blurred background to maintain professionalism.

Identification

Participants must use their real, full name as their profile name on Zoom so that hosts and facilitators can accurately identify attendees.

If a host or facilitator is unable to identify a participant based on their profile name, they will send a private message to the participant and ask them to change the name. If this is not actioned, participants will be removed from the main room and put in the waiting room until they can be identified.

Microphone use

Microphones should be kept muted when not speaking to reduce background noise, unless a participant has been invited to speak or is actively contributing to discussion.

Engagement and participation

Participants are expected to remain engaged throughout the session. Multitasking, use of mobile phones for unrelated activities, gaming or other disruptive behaviour should be avoided.

Camera use

Unless instructed otherwise, participants are encouraged to keep their camera on where possible to support engagement and interaction. Backgrounds should be appropriate and non-distracting.

Recording and screenshots

Unauthorised recording of sessions, including audio, video or screenshots, is strictly prohibited without the explicit permission of the host and all participants. For more information, please see our acceptable use policy for course registrations.

Use of chat function

The chat function should be used appropriately for event-related questions and professional discussion only. It must not be used for private conversations, irrelevant comments or inappropriate content.

Breaches of this code of conduct

RCPCH reserves the right to take action where this code of conduct is not adhered to. Participants who breach it may receive a private warning from the event organisers.

Continued or serious breaches may result in removal from the session without refund or further notice.
