Certification

This is the final stage on the paediatric training pathway. When paediatricians take up a substantive, honorary or fixed-term consultant appointment in the NHS, they must be listed on the Specialist Register at the General Medical Council (GMC).

There are several routes you may take to be entered on the Specialist Register. Each requiring the College to check that you are appropriately qualified before making a recommendation to the General Medical Council (GMC).

Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) is for doctors who wish to join the Specialist Register, and whose specialist training, qualifications or experience were partly or completely acquired outside of an approved CCT programme.
Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (combined programme) (CESR CP) is for doctors who have previous training from outside a GMC approved programme may combine this training with a run-through specialist training programme for this type of certification.
Doctors on the GMC Specialist Register may also apply for their registration to be updated with an approved sub-specialty in paediatrics.

How do we support the transition of senior trainees 'stepping up' into new consultant roles?

Our Stepping up pilot programme supports the five year period from RCPCHStart (Specialty Trainee 7+) to the end of year three consultancy. We have a regional network of doctors and a range of learning resources.
