I interviewed Dr Arnab Seal for the fifth episode of our Leading the Way podcast. His journey is not only inspiring but also deeply instructive for anyone navigating leadership in healthcare and beyond.
1. Following our dreams
Arnab’s story is striking—he was part of a team that set up a new hospital and pioneered a new approach to healthcare in India. That’s not something many of us can say we’ve done. Even though the outcome may have evolved from the original vision, the impact remains profound.
Whether through his work as chief editor on a textbook about children with neurodevelopmental disabilities or his broader vision, Arnab exemplifies what it means to dream big and follow through. This challenges us to ask: What are the dreams we hold? How can we make time to pursue them?
2. Seizing opportunities
A recurring theme in our podcast series is the importance of recognizing and embracing opportunities. Arnab’s involvement with the European Academy of Childhood-onset Disability began with a chance opportunity following his work on the textbook. That led to chairing the Academy and eventually contributing to the International Alliance. One step led to another—all because he seized the moment.
It’s a reminder to stay alert to possibilities and be ready to act when they arise.
3. Leadership through connection and authenticity
Arnab’s leadership style is rooted in connection and authenticity. His work with the International Alliance for Childhood-onset Disability has been built on relationships - understanding colleagues across countries, appreciating their contexts and bringing ideas together.
In the rush of our daily roles, it’s easy to overlook the value of genuine relationships. But understanding what matters to those we work with often leads to stronger ideas and better outcomes.
4. Facing challenge and adversity
Leadership inevitably involves challenge. Arnab’s advice to “lean in” rather than avoid difficulties is powerful. Our instinct may be to sidestep adversity, but leaning in - taking stock, understanding the issue, and confronting it - can be transformative.
It’s often in these moments that real change happens.
