The 5th edition of this Intercollegiate Document (ICD) is published on a dedicated website as of autumn 2025. It outlines competencies for each of the five levels of health care staff who support children and young people and for senior managers and executives.
The website, Safeguarding children and young people & children and young people in care: Competencies for health care staff (2025), incorporates a review and update of two documents, Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff (2019) and Looked after Children: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff (2020).
It includes:
- introduction with the background and rationale
- competencies for five levels of health care staff and an additional level for senior managers and executives
- appendices including role and job description resources, learning resources and templates for reflection and appraisal, legislation and statutory and non-statutory guidance
- terminology (key terms and abbreviations) and references
- voice of the child.
It is co-produced by RCPCH (who also hosts the website), College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, Public Health Wales – National Safeguarding Service, Royal College of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Nursing, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Royal College of Psychiatrists and Scottish Government.
