SPS St Andrew's Day Symposium

The Scottish Paediatric Society's AGM and St Andrew’s Day Paediatric Symposium will be held jointly with RCPE, RCPCH and the SACCH at the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh on Friday 7 November 2025, hosted by Dr Philippa Wood, Consultant in Paediatrics, NHS Lothian. The meeting will follow the format of six clinical case and six QI/Audit/Research presentations in addition to a guest speaker. We are delighted to host, Professor Steve Turner, RCPCH President, and former SPS President, will provide the RCPCH update, as well as our Charles McNeil Lecture. 

A full programme shall be posted after abstract selection.

Abstract submissions

All members are invited to submit abstracts for the following sections of the meeting:

  • Clinical case presentations: The submitted abstract should highlight important or unusual clinical presentations, issues in relation to the diagnostic work up, management or complications. Six cases will be selected for platform presentation. A prize will be given for the best clinical case presentation.
  • Research /Audit / Quality Improvement presentations: Please send abstracts of original research work or audit carried out in any paediatric speciality. Six cases will be selected for platform presentation. A prize and Oman Craig Trophy will be given for the best research or audit presentation.
  • Poster presentations: Researchers are invited to present their work in a poster format. A maximum of 10 posters will be selected and a prize will be given to the best poster presentation. 
  • Climate Change Prize: This prize will be awarded for relevant research, audit, or a significant project development that provides evidence of influencing the health of children and young people. Some examples or relevant areas to consider may be
    • Direct effects of pollution on children and young people’s health
    • Reduced plastic waste by change in NHS prescribing practice, eg inhalers
    • Influencing NHS recognition in a hospital or community setting of the need for action in relation to climate change
    • Diseases related to increased climate extremes
    • Mental health concerns related to climate change.
