Creating a smokefree generation and tackling youth vaping in the UK - consultation response

In December 2023, we responded to a consultation from the UK Government and devolved administrations’ on creating a smokefree generation and tackling youth vaping. The College supports raising the age of sale to create a smokefree generation and a full prohibition on the sale and supply of disposable vapes.

The RCPCH responded to the UK Government and devolved administrations’ consultation to protect future generations from the harm of smoking by creating the first smokefree generation and measures to reduce young people vaping.

Our full response to the consultation is available to download below. In our response we stated that:

  • The College supports raising the age of sale to create a smokefree generation
  • On vaping, we support a full prohibition on the sale and supply of disposable vapes
  • The use of all imagery, colouring and branding for vapes should be restricted to reduce their appeal to children
  • Vapes should be put behind the counter in shops with limited display and with no other instore or externally visible promotion
  • Non-nicotine vapes and alternative nicotine products should be regulated in the same way as nicotine vapes.
