Douglas Gairdner was the first paediatrician in Cambridge after studying at Trinity College, Oxford. He trained at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School and began working at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street and at the Bellevue Hospital in New York. After the war, he worked with Spence as first assistant in the paediatric department at Newcastle before becoming consultant paediatrician and associate lecturer in Cambridge.
He wrote extensively and was the editor of Recent Advances in Paediatrics and the Archives of Disease in Childhood.
