Neil McIntosh occupied the Chair of Child Life and Health at the University of Edinburgh from 1988 to 2007. He was a distinguished Vice-President for Science, Research and Clinical Effectiveness for the College from 2002 to 2007. He also served as Chairman of the College’s Ethics Advisory Committee from 1995 to 2001 and as President of the European Society for Paediatric Research from 1992 to 1993.

Neil is the author of almost 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and nine books: he was the leading writer of a pivotal document guiding standards of ethical behaviour in paediatrics, including withdrawal of newborn intensive care. His recent work on prevention of childhood obesity and his strong contribution to forensic aspects of child protection crown an extraordinary research career.
