Scottish Government launches consultation document on plans for Scotland's new diet and obesity strategy

Today the Scottish Government has launched its consultation document A Healthier Future - Actions and Ambitions on Diet, Activity and Healthy Weight. It sets out three broad areas where they intend to act; transforming the food environment, living healthier and more active lives, and leadership and exemplary practice. The consultation will run from 26 October 2017 until 31 January 2018.

Commenting on the launch of the Scottish Government’s consultation, A Healthier Future – Action and Ambitions on Diet, Activity and Healthy Weight, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s Officer for Scotland, Professor Steve Turner, said:

“This comprehensive set of proposals would go a long way towards tackling Scotland’s obesity epidemic. We know that the seeds for a lifetime of unhealthy weight are sown at an early age and we also know what drives it. With almost one in three of our children overweight or obese, we must act now. The proposed action on price promotions and junk food advertising aimed at children therefore are key and it’s good to see them included. However, the proposals lack weight-reduction targets and this would significantly strengthen the final measures. We look forward to working with the Scottish Government to ensure this ambitious obesity strategy is delivered.”
