Significant gaps in the workforce - findings from our census

This week we released our key workforce report, which uses RCPCH census data to formulate essential workforce policy recommendations. The paediatric workforce must be prioritised in workforce planning to improve child health outcomes in the UK.

RCPCH President Professor Russell Viner, in his interview with the Health Service Journal, highlighted the "significant risk" to children, young people and their families posed by unfilled paediatric training posts. The HSJ released a further article in its fortnightly Ward Round newsletter, which discussed workforce shortages in the wider healthcare context.

We estimate that 850 more paediatric consultants need to be recruited in the UK to meet service demand. You can read the findings and our five key recommendations in our overview report.

Alongside the launch of this report, we also now have supplementary census resources, which allow you to explore our workforce data in further detail. This includes the workforce data dashboard, an interactive MS Excel tool that enables you to see trends in the paediatric workforce since our 2003 census.
