Hugh Jackson OBE was awarded the James Spence Medal for his work in prevention of child injury. While working in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Jackson encountered a child who died after taking tablets prescribed for his mother, which led to him conducting a survey into the circumstances of accidental poisoning. His work led to childproof containers being introduced, as well as working to prevent children from choking on pen lids.
