Supporting deaneries

Health Education England (HEE) local offices in England, and deaneries in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, are responsible for the education and training of health and public health workers at a regional level. Here are guidelines and information for deaneries about the quality management of paediatric training, including externality.

Externality

The underpinning rationale for externality is to provide independent critique and identify areas of good practice or of concern. At the core of the process is ensuring patient safety.

The use of external representation is vital to ensure that standards are upheld and also to maintain the robustness and fairness of the process, applying the principles of equality and diversity.

The Gold Guide (General Medical Council) specifies external representation at the following events:

  • 10% of ARCP outcomes for each Deanery
  • triggered/monitored visits
  • appeal panels.

It is the responsibility of the Deanery to ensure external representation takes place.

For queries on externality and help securing external representation, please contact qualityandstandards@rcpch.ac.uk

Post and programme approval

All requests for post and programme approval are all made directly to the GMC. Find out more from GMC about programme and location approvals

College Tutor

The College Tutor is the RCPCH representative in the NHS Trust. Each Tutor has a duty to keep up to date with our standards in education and training, new educational initiatives and changes to the curriculum, examinations and assessments.

Find out what a College Tutor does, including the appointment process and how to notify us of a change in Tutor.

RCPCH ePortfolio

RCPCH ePortfolio is the online learning tool for paediatric trainees to monitor progress through the curriculum. It's easy to use and stores everything trainees do in their timeline. To support trainees - and trainers - in your region, you may need to review content on ePortfolio or set up ARCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression) panel forms.

You can find out how to use it on our ePortfolio guidance for supporting training page.
