Emotional abuse and emotional neglect - online learning

These can be some of the hardest issues for health and social care professionals to deal with in terms of safeguarding children. Being able to recognise and manage emotional abuse and neglect in a coordinated multiagency approach can ensure children get the help and support they need.

This eLearning module is intended to support you to identify the key features of emotional abuse and emotional neglect, and how these should be managed using a multi-agency approach.

It is expected this course will take approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes to complete.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this eLearning, you will be able to:

  • Identify the common features in cases of emotional abuse and emotional neglect
  • Assess the different factors that can contribute to emotional abuse and emotional neglect and describe its impact on the child
  • Outline the principles for managing emotional abuse and emotional neglect in a multi-agency approach including key actions to take


The target audience is multi-agency, including paediatric trainees and consultants, nurses, mental health practitioners, teachers and social workers.
