Starting out as an expert witness in paediatrics – online workshop

This half-day workshop introduces you to the work of expert witnesses and how you could be involved in supporting courts to make decisions in the best interests of children and young people.

Medicolegal cases involving children and young people are often protracted due to the lack of expert witnesses available to guide the courts involved. This results in children and families being stuck in the legal system without the resolutions needed to support their health, wellbeing and safety.

Whether you are a relatively new trainee or an experienced consultant but never considered expert witness work before this workshop will be a great introduction to expert witness work. 

Please note that this workshop will require some pre-workshop reading. 


To introduce paediatricians to the role of expert witness and how this work can support determining the best outcomes for children and young people, and enhance your clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Outline the scope of medicolegal expert work in paediatrics
  • Describe the legal framework and processes expert witnesses need to work within
  • Express issues specific to paediatrics and medicolegal work
  • Identify the benefits for children and young people, the justice system and yourself by engaging in expert witness work

  • Paediatric trainees (all levels)
  • SAS/locally employed doctors
  • Consultant paediatricians

Technical requirement 

  • Windows or Mac computer (laptop/desktop or tablet) 
  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE). Minimum bandwidth is 600kbps (up/down) and recommended is 1.5 Mbps (up/down) 
  • Microphone and speaker
    • either using the built-in microphone/speaker 
    • or headset connected to your laptop/desktop or tablet 
  • Webcam
    • either using the built-in webcam
    • or separate webcam connected to your laptop/desktop or tablet
