Background

This one-day online course aims to develop paediatricians’ understanding of how to adapt their approach to support neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability when supporting children and young people with safeguarding issues.

The faculty consists of senior paediatricians with extensive experience in safeguarding and working with children with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability.

You'll have the opportunity to engage in a multidisciplinary panel discussion to understand the role of other professionals, share learning and understand how best to work together. You'll also hear from a leading national children’s charity who is holding a workshop on the day as well as a talk on ADHD within the youth justice system.

The course highlighted the importance of getting communication right for the CYP and making reasonable adjustments.

Course aim

To equip paediatricians to understand the additional challenges faced by children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability involved in child protection cases, and how to adapt to best support them.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Recognise the ways in which the additional needs of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodisability may impact on the child protection processes
  • Describe possible signs and presentations of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodisability affected by safeguarding issues within the clinical setting
  • Outline how to adapt their practice and communication to support children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodisability during child protection processes including signposting to relevant organisations

I'm now more confident in detecting safeguarding concerns in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
