On 20 July 2023, the Government published its full response to the independent review – led by former Regional Director of Public Health Dr Bill Kirkup CBE – into neonatal and maternity failings at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.

In June, the BMA announced that consultants in England voted to take industrial action following the ballot. The vote saw a turnout of 71% (24 106) with 86% voting yes. 

NHS data reveals that the number of children awaiting consultant led treatment for over 52 weeks has risen to 21,282. There are now 416,790 children on referral to treatment waiting lists in England.
