DfE and DHSC SEND Review - consultation response

In July 2022, we responded to the Department for Education (DfE) and Department of Health and Social Care's (DHSC) special educational needs and disability (SEND) Review.

In 2019, the Department for Education (DfE) and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) commissioned the SEND Review to understand the challenges faced by children and young people with SEND, and those educated in alternative provision.

In 2022, they initiated an extensive consultation process on their proposals for a system that offers children and young people the opportunity to thrive, with access to the right support, in the right place, and at the right time, so they can fulfil their potential and lead happy, healthy, and productive adult lives. You can read more information about this on the government's SEND review webpage.

Our Response

  • Prioritise early identification and intervention to ensure CYP with SEND have timely access to specialist support and treatments that will optimise health outcomes and school readiness.  
  • Integration of the SEND system across education, health and care settings is essential to facilitate timely delivery of joined up care and efficient use of resources. This includes seeking a commitment from the new National SEND Delivery Board to integrate with local partnerships to enable effective joint working to deliver the UK Government's proposals.  
  • Improvements in child health data infrastructure and standards when measuring the performance of the system to ensure it reflects the needs of CYP with SEND. With the potential of high quality data becoming available we also want to see this shared easily between partners.
