National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP) - Reporting dashboards

The NNAP assesses whether babies admitted to neonatal units in England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man receive consistent high quality care and identifies areas for quality improvement. The data is reported by unit, network and nation on three dashboards: NNAP Online (annual report of validated data); Public Access Dashboard (monthly report of provisional data); Restricted Access Dashboard (monthly report of provisional data, for network teams only).

NNAP dashboards

There are two public dashboards:

  • NNAP Online - annual reporting of validated, published unit, network and national level results
  • Public Access Dashboard (PAD) - monthly reporting of provisional unit, network and national level results

There is one dashboard restricted to unit or network teams:

  • Restricted Access Dashboard (RAD) - monthly reporting of patient level provisional data; log in and access via the PAD

NNAP Online

This online reporting tool presents audit results from 2014 to 2024. You can:

  • view an overall annual summary report for a selected neonatal unit or network for 2014 to 2024 NNAP results.
  • view and compare the results for specific NNAP audit measures for different units, unit designations or networks.
  • go to the outlier analysis section to view whether a result for a unit or network is outside the expected range.
  • download unit posters for NNAP 2024 data.

Public Access Dashboard (PAD)

The PAD presents results for each of the 10 NNAP performance metrics as annual rolling averages, updated monthly. Results can be displayed for neonatal units, Integrated Care Systems and Health Boards (Wales and Scotland), and by neonatal network. There is detail on the Information and FAQ screens within the dashboard.

It includes:

  • England and Wales - results relating to babies admitted for neonatal care in an NHS neonatal unit from 1 January 2017, unless otherwise stated.
  • Scotland - results relating to babies admitted for neonatal care in an NHS neonatal unit from 1 April 2022, unless otherwise stated.
  • Isle of Man - results relating to babies admitted for neonatal care in an NHS neonatal unit from 1 January 2023, unless otherwise stated.

The data is provisional and may be subject to change between updates and before the publication of the NNAP annual summary report. Data is considered unassured until the first update after 1 April each year.

Results are calculated using the latest definition of the metric, so it is expected that results within the dashboard will vary from previously published results.

Public Access Dashboard

Restricted Access Dashboard (RAD)

The RAD provides the underlying data for the NNAP performance measures to participants, visible only to neonatal units and networks. The data is refreshed monthly and presented in time series charts, tabular data, and an interactive patient list.

The RAD is intended to be used by participating neonatal units and networks for data cleaning and quality improvement purposes only. It is important to note that the data in the RAD is provisional and subject to change. Data is considered unassured until the first update after 1 April each year.

Access to the RAD is determined by the NNAP lead of each neonatal unit, and the Clinical lead or Manager of Neonatal Networks. To access the RAD, we ask the NNAP lead of each neonatal unit to email nnap@rcpch.ac.uk with the name, role title and email address of users that require access.
